Background

Chuck Royce is a widely recognized pioneer in small-cap investing.

He began his investment career as an equity analyst before founding what became Royce Investment Partners in 1972. Although virtually synonymous with both small-cap and small-cap value investing, he did not initially see himself as a value investor—or even one primarily concerned with managing risk. Like many ultimately successful investors, Chuck had to experience the pain of losing money to help him shape his investment outlook—which grew into the valuation-sensitive approach our firm has been evolving and refining over more than five decades.

Those early losses led Chuck to two insights that were key to his highly disciplined, bottom-up approach. First was the idea that long-term investment success was the product of both preserving capital and growing it. An approach that lost less during downturns while remaining competitive in more bullish periods could provide strong absolute returns while also being likely to beat its benchmark over periods of three or more years. The second idea was that this risk-conscious approach could work even better in the broad and diverse small-cap universe than in more established (that is, larger) asset classes due to small-cap’s inefficiency and related lack of institutional attention.

The same misperceptions that led most other portfolio managers to avoid small-cap stocks were those that Chuck saw as potentially working to his portfolio’s advantage. Investing in companies that were unknown or barely researched allowed him to uncover numerous potentially profitable opportunities as he guided our firm’s growth.

These and other insights into the practice of small-cap investing remain relevant more than five decades into our work as small-cap specialists. Chuck’s pioneering approaches to managing small-cap portfolios inform each of our small-cap investment Strategies today.
